As Dr Percy outlined in the CESA session ‘The Connected Leader’, we recommend four effective interlinked steps to move beyond instructional coaching.
1. Encouraging collective over superhero leadership – We have seen how this can positively impact engagement and trust – two of the foundation stones for building a psychologically safe environment that is conducive to coaching.
2. Using coaching work across generations – Understanding the approaches to leadership each generation brings to the table can help facilitate discussions on what brings us together rather than what sets us apart. How else can we help participants feel included?
3. Slaying deficit-based appraisal – Just as you would encourage your students to build on their strengths, how about switching from a zombie approach that focuses on weaknesses? By identifying strengths and seeing how these link to coaching goals, it becomes easier to see a way forward and embrace the will to advance towards that goal.
4. Harnessing the Power of Positive Psychology – Create the life-giving organisation that you yearn to be and lead with hope, faith and challenge. How can we draw on individuals’ strengths to build a brighter future for the team/organisation?
Combined, these help to make the ‘ME + WE = US’ formula a reality.
What Makes TeamOptix Different?
You may have been put off by the idea of the external coach swooping in like a superhero, imparting their expert knowledge and instructing the way forward.
Instead, we believe our mission is to share the tools and skills that will help to empower you to become the best manager-coach you can be, integrate and align these with your own organisational culture and build the learning culture that you want and need.
